Islamorada, FL – July 10, 2013 – Celebrated Florida landscape photographer Clyde Butcher and his “Preserving Eden” exhibit will open July 13th at the new Florida Keys Discovery Center, located on the grounds of the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost in Islamorada. With over 30 photographs, most in the artist’s signature large format black and white, the exhibit uses Butcher’s own words as well as ecology-themed story boards to put the Everglades and other Florida environs into a conservation context, said Matthew Woodside, curator at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton, which developed the traveling display.
To coincide with the opening of the exhibit Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts & Lodges announced the launch of its “Share YOUR Adventure” photo contest on Facebook, with prizes for the best adventure travel photos. Commenting on the timing of the launch Outpost President Mark Ellert noted, “Guy Harvey and Clyde Butcher are synonymous with the visual arts and conservation. Here we have two great artists with one resonant message: celebrate and conserve this great ecosystem called the Everglades.”
When asked what transforms a photograph into art, Butcher responded, “I think it’s obviously the person behind the camera who creates the art. Art doesn’t come from fancy equipment. It comes from a way of seeing the world.” Clyde Butcher’s powerful black and white photographs explore his personal bond with the environment. The exquisite beauty and depth of his work draw the viewer into a relationship with nature. A large format camera allows him to capture elaborate detail and textures that distinguish the intricacy of the landscape.
Beginning August 1st, aspiring artists and Guy Harvey fans will be encouraged on Facebook to post photos of their memorable travel experiences. Grand prize winners of the Outpost photo contest will be showcased in the Guy Harvey magazine and receive sportswear, travel gear and accessories from program partners including AFTCO, Go Pro, Sixt Car Rental, Divers Direct and others. Robin Schlaudecker, general manger of the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost noted the Florida Keys Discovery Center and Theater is being designed with the help of the Guy Harvey Outpost organization to showcase the history and environmental conservation efforts underway throughout the Keys. “Photography and art are powerful communication tools. We intend to use both as we transform the Islander facilities at Oceanside and Bayside into the newest member of the Guy Harvey Outpost family.”
Despite new guestroom interiors, extensive upgrades to the lobby and other public spaces, the conversion will not change Islander’s character. Resort owner David Curry and marine life artist Guy Harvey are both committed to enhancing Islander’s signature casual Keys’ ambiance that has made the resort so unique and popular including the resort’s iconic signage.
The sign marks the entrance of Islander, a Guy Harvey Outpost Resort, at mile-marker 82. With 139 guestrooms, suites and two-bedroom townhomes for extended stays, the Islander Outpost offers the best in casual Keys’ hospitality with its expansive beachfront, pools and 14-slip marina basin.

A beautiful fish with a very ugly face. Slippery and slimy but tasty to eat. A feisty sport fish but a nuisance exotic. This is the paradox of the snakehead-- an invader native to Asia introduced about 15 years ago and now firmly established in Fort Lauderdale-area canals.
"We sure wish they weren't here," says Kelly Gestring, a non-native fish and wildlife biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "We are definitely encouraging people to practice catch, keep and eat."
Like the 33 other non-native fish reproducing in South Florida waterways, the snakehead competes with the locals such as black bass and bream and the deliberately-stocked peacock bass for food and space. Generalist feeders, they will eat "anything that comes across their mouths", according to Gestring-- including a wide variety of fish; crayfish; bufo toads; Muscovy duck eggs, or whatever.
With "crazy Martian eyes"-- (as one angler put it) --and orange eye spots on a dark body, snakeheads are both beautiful and ugly. When hooked, they splash and jump better than a largemouth, inspiring a group of Broward County anglers to form a small tournament series targeting them. They make excellent butterflied baits for daytime swordfishing, and their flavor when cooked is mild and likened by many to tilapia-- a ubiquitous, farm-raised staple in grocery stores and restaurants. The largest one caught so far weighed 15 pounds-- taken by angler Corey Nowakowski last May in Deerfield Beach.
Fort Lauderdale five-star chef Anthony Hunt-- fresh from being "Chopped" on the Food Network--decided to whack a few snakeheads with his son Marlei, 9, earlier this month in the canals of North Broward. Hunt, 39, is embarking on a career as a professional bass tournament competitor; his son has won two local fishing contests. Armed with their favorite Live Target hollow-bodied frog lures, father and son aimed to catch enough for a meal before heading out on their weekend round of chores.
"People are very curious about them. Their popularity is increasing," Hunt said as he cast his frog into a shallow, grass-lined drainage canal. "I've never eaten one before, so it's the first time for me."
Hunt caught a small snakehead right away and lost three more--plus one of his Live Targets-- in the same canal before deciding to relocate to an apartment complex pond a few blocks to the north. Marlei got a few hits but didn't land any.
"It's fun. You never know what you're gonna catch," Marlei said, undeterred.
"Get it on that bank, okay? And bring it off," Hunt directed his son as the boy cast his frog.
In a shady, stagnant section of the pond, Hunt caught a second snakehead estimated at a couple of pounds. Not long afterward, he got a third one about five pounds. The haul would be enough for the chef to make fish tacos for his family (see recipe below). He also caught and released a two-pound bass in the same spot.
Gestring is very supportive of the snakehead angling efforts of Hunt, Marlei and others.
"The fishing part is a great way for the public to assist us in controlling their numbers," the biologist said. "We just can't get them all."
Snakehead Tacos
Ingredients: 2 lbs. snakehead fillets cut into 5" x 1" pieces; 1 cup buttermilk; 2 cups flour; 1 cup fine cornmeal; 6 flour tortillas (either homemade or top-shelf store-bought); salt and pepper to taste.
Salad slaw mixture:
1 red bell pepper thinly sliced; Napa cabbage thinly sliced; 2 oz. fresh corn; 2 oz. black beans; 1/2 oz. cilantro; 1/2 oz. parsley; 1/4 red pickled onion; 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper; 3 tbsp. olive oil; sriracha sauce as garnish to top tacos.
Directions: Preheat 16 oz. vegetable oil in small sauce pot on medium heat. Toss the salad ingredients together in a mixing bowl and set aside. Pour buttermilk on top of fish fillets and mix well. Remove fish and add to a bowl containing flour, corn meal and salt/pepper. Toss thoroughly; shake off excess flour and set aside. Make sure not to stack the fish fillets on top of each other.
Deep-fry fillets in oil until golden-brown, then place on sheets of paper towels to drain off excess oil.
Place tortillas in a skillet on medium heat and sear lightly for 30 seconds on each side. Remove from heat. Assemble tacos and EAT!

; 20 makos (yellow); seven oceanic whitetips (pink); and one dusky, four hammerheads and a sixgill (white and barely visible off Boca Grande, FL and Bermuda).
“Pretty impressive. A huge part of the ocean,” noted Wetherbee of the sharks’ movements.
Satellite tags, which cost upwards of $4,000 apiece, are technology’s most precise method of monitoring the animals’ movements minute to minute. Funded by the non-profit Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, the transmitters are affixed to the sharks’ dorsal fin, sending their locations to a satellite that beams the information to the researchers’ computers. Wetherbee then plots that information on Google Maps.
What this worldwide splash of color represents is a blueprint for protecting sharks from habitat loss and overfishing. And the tracking data has turned a few shark theories on their heads.
According to Wetherbee, tiger sharks– previously believed to be a coastal species– are nothing of the kind. The data shows they spend half their time in the open ocean thousands of miles from shore, but in winter show a snowbird-like affinity for coral reefs in the Caribbean and Bahamas. One tiger nicknamed Harry Lindo covered 27,000 miles– the longest distance ever tracked for the species.
Mako sharks seem to stick to the open ocean– cruising the edge of the Continental Shelf off the U.S. east coast then making long trips north to New England and Canada.
The oceanic whitetips tend to wander around aimlessly, though whatever they’re doing isn’t aimless to them– sort of like a bee flying over fields and alighting on several flowers in one field but totally ignoring those in another.
The makos and whitetips were named competitors in the Great Shark Race of 2015 created by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Research Institute to encourage businesses and individuals to sponsor satellite tags. The shark covering the greatest distance in six months– a shortfin mako named Ebenezer that swam 7,387 miles–was declared the winner. Ebenezer– named by Ebenezer Thomas Primary School in Tortola, British Virgin Islands– was sponsored by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin United. It was tagged off Ocean City, Md. on May 27, made it to Newfoundland in the allotted time, and is still transmitting.

Unlike those free-swimming makos and whitetips, Wetherbee noted that hammerheads tend to stick to coastlines in the U.S. and avoid long-distance travel. Sixgills, he said, stay in deep water and don’t go very far while duskys seem attached to certain sites, but still may travel a few hundred miles.
“There are sharks without a country, moving through 10 to 15 different countries,” Wetherbee said. “They are all over the place.”
The research has important implications for shark management: knowing what countries’ waters the sharks use suggests who is responsible for managing that population and where the animals are most likely to be harvested by fishers.
“Shark populations have been overfished quite a bit. Managing these populations is going to take international cooperation,” Wetherbee said.
Mako sharks, while not classified as overfished, could still be in trouble as they are heavily targeted by commercial longliners and recreational anglers in the U.S. and elsewhere.
“Makos are in a lot of areas with tuna and swordfish,” Wetherbee said. “Everybody is after these makos because they are good to eat.”
Indeed, 13 of the 49 makos tagged by the GHRI scientists over the past four years have been caught and killed by commercial fishers. The tiger sharks, fortunately, escaped those gauntlets.
Wetherbee, Harvey and Shivji plan more shark-tagging expeditions in 2016, hoping to fit another 40 to 50 animals with satellite transmitters.
