September 6 - Lionfish Safari: All registered divers will depart from their place of choice to complete the mission of hunting and capturing as many lionfish as possible. All captured lionfish must be kept on ice and surrendered at the Guy Harvey Outpost the following day. Each registrant will receive a guide to surrounding reefs that contain lionfish, a tournament t-shirt, meal ticket and access to the weigh-in and Family Fun Day on Sept. 7. There will be cash prizes including largest and smallest lionfish and Guy Harvey raffle items and giveaways.

September 7 - Participants and their families will be encouraged to enjoy a day of family fun at Guy Harvey Outpost after the weigh-in between 11a.m. - 12:30 p.m. All fish will be weighed and measured by Reef Monitoring and then passed to along to students and NOAA biologist Alex Fogg for dissection and food preparation. During this process, the group will explain the anatomy of these fish and why they are so harmful to other species in the Gulf waters. Then the lionfish fillets will be passed along to the chef station where they will be cooked and prepared for the tasting station.
Other family-centric activities will include kid-friendly lionfish education from Ocean Pals, live music, a beachside cookout, drink specials, and beach games. At 2:30 p.m. the tournament winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded.

Film Festival Part of Gulf Fisheries Symposium
ST. PETE BEACH, FL— August 31, 2012—Legendary fisherman, artist and conservationist, <a title="Guy Harvey Inc. web site" href="http://www.guyharvey.com" target="_blank">Dr. Guy Harvey</a>, will host a film festival at the Tradewinds Island Grand Resort on Saturday, September 15, 2012, in conjunction with the <a title="About the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Symposium" href="http://guyharvey.wordpress.com/2012/08/21/gulf-of-mexico-fisheries-symposium-announced-for-september-14-15/" target="_blank">Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Symposium</a>. Two of Harvey's award-winning documentaries will be featured along with trailers for his upcoming films. Admission is free but parking is limited and will cost $5 per car. The first film with be shown at 7:00 p.m. with the second showing immediately following an intermission.
In 2011, Harvey's documentary, <a title="TIYO web site" href="http://www.thisisyourocean.com/" target="_blank">This is Your Ocean: Sharks</a>, won the Macgillivray Freeman Conservation Award at the <a title="NBFF web site" href="http://www.newportbeachfilmfest.com/2013/" target="_blank">Newport Beach Film Festival</a> in California. It will open the Saturday night event. Also on tap for viewers will be Harvey's latest film, <a title="Preview of "Mystery of the Grouper Moon"" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AtFywQVR-I&list=UUK-ol6-5sVk_NcRHN1LtmOQ&index=7&feature=plcp" target="_blank">Mystery of the Grouper Moon</a>, which was filmed last year in the Cayman Islands.
"Grouper Moon is a very important project for us because it shows how science and art can work in concert to bring about responsible marine conservation," Harvey said.
Mystery of the Grouper Moon focuses on a reef in Little Cayman where thousands of Nassau grouper congregate each February during the full moon. The grouper, which come to the same reef from miles around, are there for their annual spawning. Conservationists in Cayman persuaded the government to close fishing on the reef during the spawning season to protect the fish when they are vulnerable to mass catches by local fishermen.
"I have a lifelong love affair with fishing," Harvey said, "and this film illustrates why there are certain times when we need to protect the species in order to have healthy and sustainable populations."
This is Your Ocean: Sharks is a bit of a love affair as well between a man and a shark. The star of the film is Emma, a 12-foot tiger shark that has been befriended by famed scuba diver, Jim Abernethy. Conventional wisdom has been that tiger sharks are ruthless man eaters and historically they have been one of the most feared sharks. However, Abernethy and Emma formed a bond during hundreds of dives and they sometimes bump nose to dive mask in a heart-stopping show of affection. Abernethy likens Emma to a "puppy dog" and the film reveals how shark and man can peacefully co-exist.

ST. PETE BEACH, FL—AUGUST 20, 2012— Two years after the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil well was finally capped, the largest gathering of scientists, fishery experts and government officials are gathering in St. Pete Beach to share the findings of their research, and to offer direction for further study.
The <a title="Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Symposium web site" href="http://www.gulffisheriessymposium.com/" target="_blank">Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Symposium</a>, on Sept. 14-15, is the first summit to bring together the various stakeholders in the Gulf's fishery, an annual multi-billion-dollar industry for Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.
The oil gusher and the clear environmental damage in 2010 captivated international attention and raised doubts about the safety of eating Gulf of Mexico seafood. It also raised concerns about short- and long-term damage to fish stocks. Research to be presented at the symposium will begin to definitively address these issues.
The symposium will also present the results of research funded by the <a title="GHOF web site" href="http://www.guyharveyoceanfoundation.org" target="_blank">Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation</a>'s 2010 <a title="About the "Save Our Gulf" campaign" href="http://guyharvey.wordpress.com/2010/08/30/727/" target="_blank">"Save Our Gulf" campaign</a>, which raised $500,000 to fund gulf fisheries research related to the oil spill. It will bring together representatives from all sectors of the marine world - recreational and commercial fishermen, non-governmental and governmental agencies, politicians, fishing authorities and marine scientists - to explore vital issues facing the Gulf through presentations and panel discussions. More than 200 are expected to attend and participate.
The recommendations offered by the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Symposium will also involve requesting funding from the $20 billion trust established by BP to respond to claims from individuals, businesses and government entities.
