Bid to Support Ocean Scholarships at the Blazing Mako
By Sue Cocking, Guy Harvey Outpost Travel Journalist
Custom-made offshore trolling lures; jewelry, sculptures and paintings; Guy Harvey swag; marine electronics. These are just a handful of the items up for bid in the silent auction of the Blazing Mako Tournament & Festival presented by C. Davis Electric June 17-19 at the Islander, a Guy Harvey Outpost in Islamorada.
The aim of the Father’s Day Weekend event is to raise as much money as possible for scholarships for students at the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography at Nova Southeastern University whose mascot is the mako shark. The more you bid, the more money that will be paid out through the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.
World-renowned sculptor Kent Ullberg is donating a 12-inch bronze statue of a blue marlin valued at $1,300 to the silent auction. He also created the bronze perpetual trophy of a mako shark for the Blazing Mako fishing tournament.
“I love to fish and I have fished and dived together with Guy Harvey, diving in all the world’s oceans,” Ullberg said. “Together we have studied gamefish. I’ve learned more about fish anatomy from Guy Harvey than anyone. For anatomy and getting it right, he’s been my mentor.”
